[swɔn], Sir (seit 1904) Joseph Wilson, britischer Erfinder, * Sunderland 31. 10. 1828, ✝ Warlingham (County Surrey) 27. 5. 1914; Pionier auf dem Gebiet der Fotografie und neben T. A. Edison Wegbereiter der elektrischen Glühlampe; erfand mehrere fotografische Kopierverfahren und 1871 die Bromsilber-Gelatine-Beschichtung für Glasplatten und Papier. Nachdem er bereits 1860 einfache Kohlefadenlampen gebaut hatte, konnte er diese nach Verbesserung der Vakuumtechnik 1880 als brauchbare Lichtquelle produzieren. Bei der Suche nach besseren Kohlefäden für Glühlampen erfand Swan 1883 die Herstellung von Kunstseide durch Pressen von in Essigsäure gelöster Nitrocellulose durch feine Löcher.
